The mining industry was forced into arbitration by President Franklin D Roosevelt during the 1940’s. Roosevelt did this because he knew the strike of these individuals would negatively effect the war effort. This strike/ protest by the workers happened during World War II. This explains why FDR ended up stepping in to help solve the problem.
