Explain why blood cells crenate (shrivel) in a hypertonic solution?

In a hypertonic solution, the concentration of solute outside the cell is greater than inside the cell. To counteract this, water from inside the cell moves to outside the cell. Thus, the cell shrivels as it is losing water.
