Mr. hoops has a son who wants to be a basketball player almost as much as mr. hoops wants him to be one. he knows a little bit about growth hormone and asks his son's doctor if she would prescribe some for his son, so he can grow taller. what do you think the doctor tells mr. hoops?

I believe the answer is: It should work unless his son has hit puberty.
The height that we have is determined by the distance that separate our bone discs. When we finished puberty, the distance between the discs could no longer be grown,  so doing things such as consuming growth hormone would do no effect.
