This hypothesis, that modern humans originated from Africa, relies on mitochondrial DNA. Using mitochondrial DNA, the matrilineal most recent common ancestor of all currently living humans could be traced: only the female eggs contain mitochondria. The most recent common ancestor was traced to Africa at approximately 170,000 and 100,000 years ago.
