Why did the Israelite's believe they were victorious in the wars led by Joshua?

It wasn't just Joshua that made them victorious, it was also god that was granting them victory for each battle, Joshua was more of a general of god if you look at it that way, I'm not sure If I answered this question correctly, let me know if I did or didn't.
