Why doesn't the recessive gene disappear from the population?

It's called hybrid protection. Heterozygous organisms show the dominant trait but protect the recessive one. It is difficult to determine if an organisms is homozygous or heterozygous dominant. So when 2 heterozygous individuals mate the possibility of the recessive phenotype becomes real.
