how can a new interpretation change our understanding of a story

If we get a new interpretation we immediately start thinking of new ways the story will end or is shown, for example, if everyone was convinced a man killed the person in the novel but then we find out a bad past about a woman it makes us think she could have done it completely forgetting about our old interpretations that could have possibly been right.
