Given:

x-3y=5 ....(1)

-4x+y=-9 ....(2)

From equation (1),

[tex]x=5+3y\ldots.\text{ (3)}[/tex]

Substitute x=5+3y in equation (2),

[tex]-4(5+3y)+y=-9[/tex][tex]-20-12y+y=-9[/tex][tex]-11y=-9+20[/tex][tex]y=\frac{11}{-11}[/tex][tex]y=-1[/tex]

Substitute y=-1 in equation (3),

[tex]x=5+3(-1)[/tex][tex]x=5-3[/tex][tex]x=2[/tex]

Therefore, (x,y) = (2,-1)
