A box of candy was divided into three bottles P, Q and R in the ratio 9:4:11. If, instead, the candy had been divided equally between them, there would be 21 fewer pieces of candy in bottle R. How many pieces of candy were there in the box?​

Let;

  • the total number of candies be x
  • the number of candies in R be

11/22 * x = y  ----  (1)

If the candies were shared equally

The ratio of candies in R will be 6

6/24 * x = y - 11 --- (2)

substitute  y = 11/22 * x  in (2)

6x/24 = 11x/22 - 11

x/4 = x/2  - 11

multiply through with 4

x = 2x - 44

x = 44

Therefore, there are a total of 44 candies.
