The rule of adding and subtracting integers (wholes numbers) is subtracting a negative number from another negative number equals a positive number while adding a positive and a positive is simple addition.

Now if you were to add a negative to a positive (-50 + 50), the sum would be 0 because you're basically taking away 50.
